Old Chinese saying "You cannot draw circles nor square without the help from compasses and ruler." Taichi Practice is to achieve a complicate kinematics mechanism. To complete this goal a set of detail rules should be set to guide the student toward success. It is said in Chen Xing’s book: You should first following the rules, secondly move comfortably within the rules, that you feel no rule. Finally, your moves are so unpredictable that no rule can discribe or regulate, but they are so right that no rule are being violated.

These Taichi basic rules are summarized by my teacher Master Pan in his "Book of Chen style Taichi" vol. 1. It is such a great gift from him to categorize them so that we can progress upward basic on it.
